Two FCBStudios projects have been shortlisted for this year’s AJ Retrofit and Reuse awards; Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings for the Adaptive Reuse into Mixed-use category and Brighton Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre in the Conservation and Historic category.

"Grandfather of skyscrapers"

Known as the “grandfather of skyscrapers,” Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings demonstrates how historic buildings can be sustainably reused and restored after many decades in decline, through understanding, innovation, and a gentle touch to repair the fabric.

We completed this flagship heritage regeneration project to bring to life the listed building as an adaptable workspace, leisure destination and social enterprise hub for ‘the next 100 years’.

Creative unlocking

Careful conservation and refurbishment of Brighton Dome’s Regency buildings has delivered a revitalised performance venue for Brighton.

Set in historic Regency gardens and adjoining the famous Royal Pavilion, Brighton’s Grade 1 listed Corn Exchange and Grade 2 listed Studio Theatre have been refurbished for a 21st century audience.

Working with theatre experts and skilled craftspeople, the project makes major technical and operational improvements to the Corn Exchange to the Studio Theatre, including a brand new foyer space and café, better accessibility for performers and artists.

Winners for the AJ Retrofit and Reuse awards will be announced in September.
