Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings and Ulster University Belfast Campus been named as Regional Finalists in the Civic Trust Awards, with Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings going on to be shortlisted for both a National Award and an AABC Conservation Award.
The aim of the Civic Trust Awards is to encourage the very best in architecture and environmental design, to improve the built environment for all through design, sustainability, inclusiveness and accessibility, and also to reward projects that offer a positive cultural, social, economic or environmental benefit to their local communities. Awards are given, recognising that each project has been designed with the needs of all users in mind.
Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings has been a 20 year project to give the pioneering structure its third working life. The £28 million repair and adaptive re-use of one of the most important buildings of the industrial revolution – it was the first building to be constructed with an iron frame - has delivered a low-carbon, mixed-use development and a catalyst for the economic regeneration of this area of Shrewsbury.
The highly technical conservation project was celebrated in the Kings New Year honours this year, with National Conservation Manager Nick Hill from Historic England receiving a CBE for his work on the project.
Ulster University’s new Belfast city campus has been named a Regional Finalist in Ulster. The campus provides a long life, loose fit building that can accommodate the current University and flex as it evolves in the future. With its influx of 16,000 students and staff to the city centre, it is also bringing positive social and economic change to Belfast.
The award winners will be named at a ceremony on 22 March.
